A metal ball of approximately 2 tons containing an unknown product was found on a beach in southern England. Sampling and analysis on site and in the laboratory confirmed the presence of 98% lithium. CURIUM carried out a technical study and a preliminary risk analysis. The method for cutting the metal envelope and the associated safety means were thus defined and implemented taking into account the risks of ignition and explosion. The lithium was then repackaged in 5 kg drums and evacuated to a suitable treatment facility.
